Destron Fearing

Destron Fearing, based in South St. Paul, Minnesota, has been a leading developer and manufacturer of visual and electronic animal identification solutions since 1945.

A pioneer in the development of miniaturized microchip technology in the 1980s, Destron Fearing provides radio frequency identification (RFID) solutions for numerous species of livestock, wildlife and companion animals. This technology is especially important today as the production of livestock for human consumption is rapidly changing. Global demand for livestock identification is being driven by food processors, export customers, health regulators and consumers as a means to identify and track safe, high quality meat products. Additionally, this technology allows livestock producers to manage their operations more efficiently and cost effectively, thereby adding value and new profit potential to an industry where the difference between profit and loss can be minimal.

In 2005, Destron Fearing established a presence in South America, where the need for livestock identification is just emerging onto the global platform. Since then, Destron Fearing has competed for and won numerous government tenders, resulting in the sales of millions of visual and electronic tags in Argentina, Colombia, Chile, Ecuador and Paraguay. As the need for exported beef and pork products continues to grow, these markets will be prime opportunities for expanded growth.

Destron Fearing also manufactures and markets a USDA approved RFID microchip for horses. Each LifeChip microchip contains a passive transponder programmed with a unique ISO compliant 15 digit number that veterinarians subcutaneously administer at the base of the mane with the help of a specially designed, single use syringe. Once administered, microchip numbers can be recorded in breed and discipline registries or kept in farm / ranch files for future reference. They are invaluable in providing proof of ownership in the event that a horse is lost or stolen. They can also be used to identify horses involved in breeding operations, competitive sports, and international and domestic travel.

LifeChip microchips can also be programmed with Bio-Thermo® temperature sensing technology to allow owners, breeders, trainers and veterinarians to quickly and safely check a horse’s temperature at the site of administration.

Finally, Destron Fearing is a leading manufacturer of RFID microchips for companion animals around the world. Here in the United States, Destron Fearing is the exclusive manufacturer of RFID microchips for Schering Plough’s Home Again pet recovery program. Since 1995, more than 3 millions dogs and cats in this country have received Home Again microchips.
